I posted this poem last Christmas, and some have already read it. My grandkids always asked whether or not Santa ever got to have Christmas,...finally I wrote this poem for them. They all have a copy in a little book, and again, it is my gift to you. The Night After Christmas by Sherry Nicolas copyright by Sherry Nicolas Inspired by the poem: "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore For all my beloved grandchildren June 9, 1995 T'was the night after Christmas and all through the shop Not a toy was left; not even a top. As Santa retired for a long winter's sleep, He smiled to recall, instead of counting sheep. Christmas Eve had begun with elves here and there Packing toys and candy and games children share. Berries on garlands with ribbands aflutter, Fruits and nuts for treats; My! What a clutter! Into the sleigh all this treasure trove went, 'Till gentle old Comet shuddered in silent lament. With such a great load, would they ever fly? But with a jump and a jerk, they rose in the night sky. The heavy sleigh rolled! They sure thought it a gonner! Then suddenly it straightened. Thanks to good old Donner. Santa's whip cracked! His merry voice rang out! "Up boys! On boys!" The sleigh came about. Up they rose into the clouds and across the moon. There was much to be done and morning would come soon. From roof top to roof top, Santa's raindeer flew, With nary a mis-step, their dainty hooves landing true. The stockings were filled with surprises for all. Under the tree Santa placed skates, sleds and a very special doll. And occasionally, he just had to take a peek At the little one's faces, so innocent in sleep. His step was silent; they knew not he was there. Ah, little Nan, fallen asleep during her prayer. Sweet Jane, knees under her tummy, bottom up in the air; Tossled head cradled by her old Teddy Bear. There's baby John in the crib by the wall, Thumb in his mouth, curled up in a ball. He tugged an errant blanket up under a chin, Bent to place a fairy kiss, and then, and then-- The blink of an eye, Santa was nowhere to be seen. Just a misty presence in a child's happy dream. On they sored through the long starry night, 'Till all was done. The day dawned clear and bright. High above they flew, heading north, homeward bound. From below came shouts of joy, voices in prayer, the bark of a hound. The air was crisp that glorious Christmas morn. A day of thanks giving for when Jesus was born. The elves were waiting, food in wonderous display, To celebrate with Santa the Holy feast day. They sang, danced and played 'till twelfth hour drew neigh. Santa's head began to nod. He rose with a deep sigh. 'We've done it yet again, my trusty, loyal elves. Each and every one of you should be proud of yourselves. Just imagine the children's enormous delight, To discover what Santa left them in the middle of night. A job well done my Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. Bless you all, old Comet, Cupid, good Donner and Blitzen. This day is done and it's time for rest, But a new year is upon us. Let's make it the best." With nods of pleasure and smiles on their faces, The elves lined up and took their places. They sang a lovely hymn of praise and worship to the One In Whose Name all has ever been done. Then applause and cheers and laughter rang out. "Hurray for Santa! Hurray for Santa!" came a mighty shout. Santa turned to his chamber and as he stepped from sight, He called over his shoulder, "Happy Christmas to all and to all, a good night!" I hope all your Christmas's are joyous, with the true meaning of Christmas in mind; and with thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ. Sherry Nicolas
