My Christmas gift to you

-----------------------------------------------------------

New Message on SantaMakers

From: Nick
Message 1 in Discussion

I posted this poem last Christmas, and some have already read it. My grandkids always asked whether or not Santa ever got to have Christmas,...finally I wrote this poem for them. They all have a copy in a little book, and again, it is my gift to you. The Night After Christmas by Sherry Nicolas copyright by Sherry Nicolas Inspired by the poem: "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore For all my beloved grandchildren June 9, 1995 T'was the night after Christmas and all through the shop Not a toy was left; not even a top. As Santa retired for a long winter's sleep, He smiled to recall, instead of counting sheep. Christmas Eve had begun with elves here and there Packing toys and candy and games children share. Berries on garlands with ribbands aflutter, Fruits and nuts for treats; My! What a clutter! Into the sleigh all this treasure trove went, 'Till gentle old Comet shuddered in silent lament. With such a great load, would they ever fly? But with a jump and a jerk, they rose in the night sky. The heavy sleigh rolled! They sure thought it a gonner! Then suddenly it straightened. Thanks to good old Donner. Santa's whip cracked! His merry voice rang out! "Up boys! On boys!" The sleigh came about. Up they rose into the clouds and across the moon. There was much to be done and morning would come soon. From roof top to roof top, Santa's raindeer flew, With nary a mis-step, their dainty hooves landing true. The stockings were filled with surprises for all. Under the tree Santa placed skates, sleds and a very special doll. And occasionally, he just had to take a peek At the little one's faces, so innocent in sleep. His step was silent; they knew not he was there. Ah, little Nan, fallen asleep during her prayer. Sweet Jane, knees under her tummy, bottom up in the air; Tossled head cradled by her old Teddy Bear. There's baby John in the crib by the wall, Thumb in his mouth, curled up in a ball. He tugged an errant blanket up under a chin, Bent to place a fairy kiss, and then, and then-- The blink of an eye, Santa was nowhere to be seen. Just a misty presence in a child's happy dream. On they sored through the long starry night, 'Till all was done. The day dawned clear and bright. High above they flew, heading north, homeward bound. From below came shouts of joy, voices in prayer, the bark of a hound. The air was crisp that glorious Christmas morn. A day of thanks giving for when Jesus was born. The elves were waiting, food in wonderous display, To celebrate with Santa the Holy feast day. They sang, danced and played 'till twelfth hour drew neigh. Santa's head began to nod. He rose with a deep sigh. 'We've done it yet again, my trusty, loyal elves. Each and every one of you should be proud of yourselves. Just imagine the children's enormous delight, To discover what Santa left them in the middle of night. A job well done my Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. Bless you all, old Comet, Cupid, good Donner and Blitzen. This day is done and it's time for rest, But a new year is upon us. Let's make it the best." With nods of pleasure and smiles on their faces, The elves lined up and took their places. They sang a lovely hymn of praise and worship to the One In Whose Name all has ever been done. Then applause and cheers and laughter rang out. "Hurray for Santa! Hurray for Santa!" came a mighty shout. Santa turned to his chamber and as he stepped from sight, He called over his shoulder, "Happy Christmas to all and to all, a good night!" I hope all your Christmas's are joyous, with the true meaning of Christmas in mind; and with thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ. Sherry Nicolas

Sherry, There is a school here in Okla. that just had a Christmas play and refused to let them have the manger scene. The residents of Mustang are going to try to sue the school. There is no Christmas without Christ. I have emailed some of the stores that are using Holidays instead of Christmas and complained. They wanted to know where I found out, what I had seen etc. Their websites have Christmas on them but not the stores unless it is on the article. I don't believe that the government or others have the right to stop me and anyone who wants to celebrate the birth of Jesus. That is the reason we have Christmas. It is not the stuff people buy or any of the rest, IT IS Jesus. I could get very winded on this but won't. Shirley

Ali, I agree with sherry - Judith says 45 minute at 275. I never had a problem with browning except once on a set of hands I forgot and let bake too long. Judith hadc us check the heads after about 30 minutes for browning and keep checking every 5 minutes till done. Just barely barely open the door to peek. She said if it starts to brown - seperate a paper towel in one layer and drape ot over the head. On a life size head I bake for an hour and 15 minutes. I usually drape the paper towel over it halfway through just as a preventative measure. Holly H.

Didn't we have a long discussion about this very same topic a few months ago? I for one am a Christian and truly do understand the meaning of the season. However I also understand tolerance. If we want seperation of church and state in this country we have to understand that one of the reprcussions is that government agencys cannot promote religious activities. If I do not want my government to tell me what religion I have to practise then I have to respect the right of other faiths to not want to have to listen to or participate in observances of my faith at government sponsored events. If a business puts up a sign that says Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas is does not prevent me from observing Christmas in a way that is meaningful to me. If I felt I had the right to require them to put up a sign saying Merry Christmas, than I couldn't complain if they wanted to force me to observe Jewish, Muslim, Buddist or whatever other relgious holiday they choose. If feel that the best way for me to promote the true meaning of the season is to make sure my own behavior is reflective of my religious beliefs, at Christmas and throughout the year. Holly H.

I personally think that this is taking political correctness too far and I don't know what if anything could be done about it. I just seems to me that because some don't believe in Christmas that our right to publicly celebrate Christmas is being curtailed. Yet if we watch a movie on TV we have to listen to all the inuendos, and filthy talk in it. Yet we arent supposed to say Merry Christmas? Wonder what they are going to call the "After Christmas" sales. Sherry

Ali, I took judith's class, and she had us bake at 275 for 45 min. Now that was a 4" head and there was quite a lot of clay on it, at least 1/4" and more in places. The ears, top of the head, and nose of most of them were were browned a little. Judith didn't seem concerned about it and told us that the coloring would cover it up. I still have that head and have never colored it so I don't know. Mine wasn't as bad as the rest, but it was the first one in the oven, right in the middle, and some of the others that browned worse were around on mine closer to the oven walls, so mabe that was the difference. Mine still browned a little though. I keep an oven themometer in my oven at home to be sure of my temp before I bake. Sherry

HI Pat I wanted to add my praise to your piece as well! I think he is great! I think it is totally cool how each artist here can make a Santa to fit a theme! It is just great. These telemed devices sound wonderful! I can understand how they would improve the quality of life for so many. Are they expensive to buy? Or are they provided through a health care program? Thaks for sharing your Santa with us and also your information about these devices. I have heard of them but don't know how widely used they are in our area. (not sure if they even are hear) But certainly something I want to look into here. ~Norma

I will say no more about this subject and the following is My final quote and this is from Jack Johnston: Several of the artists have been asking about the best and proper way to
cure ProSculpt. As you know we have had ProSculpt for nearly five
years, during that time we have heard every possible way of curing it
and every conceivable time and temperature. None of the methods we have
heard work as well as following the instructions on the back of the
label. Our chemists spend eight hours per day five days per week
testing and re testing the clay and the methods of curing it to the best
possible strength and color. Their reports have always been
consistent. They recommend 275 degrees F (130C) for 15 minutes for
every 1/4 inch of thickness.

We recommend sculpting each doll at least 1/8 inch thick and no more
that 1/2 inch thick. Obviously you can cure it thinner and thicker, but
the best results will be as the instructions suggest. When curing
ProSculpt in an oven you should use a thermometer to assure the correct
curing temperature. Even though your oven may be new, it is likely
10-20 degrees off of calibration. You should never over bake any of the
polymer clays. Never get the clay too close to the heating elements.
Never leave the clay curing while you go to the store or the movie. If
you are going to leave the house you should remove the clay from the
oven just in case the oven was left on.

ProSculpt clay will last indefinitely if it is cured properly. It will
never deteriorate or break down as long as it is cared for under normal
temperatures. ProSculpt clay is made of PVC material much like the
formula used to make the inside of your refrigerator, the dash board of
your car, your drinking pipes and the sprinkler pipes that water your
lawn. As PVC never deteriorates under the ground carrying water, nor in
your refrigerator (two extreme conditions) it will last for hundreds of
year in the form of a doll as long as they are properly cared for.

Yes, you can break it just as you can any fine piece of art. However,
if you cure it at the proper temperatures, time and thickness it is
extremely strong. ProSculpt is made of only the finest and safest
ingredients available. It is approved by the Art and Creative Materials
Institute as a NON-TOXIC sculpting clay, safe for use by crafts
enthusiasts.

If you have any questions about the use of ProSculpt we offer free
technical service through our toll free line at 800-290-9998. You may

Hi Holly,
I still stand by what I said, 250 and not higher. Baking each quater inch thickness maybe 20 minutes per. I have a drill that has a bit aproximately the thickness of a large needle like used for crewl embroidery. I drill a tiny hole in the back of the head to assure myself of the piece being completely baked through and through. When I began this madness close to twenty years ago, my husbands nephew, a scientist had been very active in development of Polymer in various uses even in commercial gardening. He noticed a box of polymer based clay in my studio and began explaining a lot of things about it that I didn't give a darn about, however all long the way I have plied him with many questions about different things, especially when I was teaching for Michaels Arts and Crafts, I taught on a circut type rotation for them, depending where there was heavy interest for sculpting with polymer. I blamed many clay quirks on different climates. So I would call Dan, at any rate, after having said all of the above......250 works for me and I have several really ugly pieces that I did, which have been with me for many years one of them in a storage bin exposed to extreme changes in temps. AND HE AINT CRACKED YET! which in retrospect is rather a shame, he would look better. Probably the most important thing you can have is an oven which holds a TRUE TEMP. Dan also said, "moonie's were caused in part,
by differentiating differences in mixing and "rates of expulsion through extrusion" When I asked him for an explanation on this he said "polymer clay companies will make slight mixture differences to comply with seasonal changes in temps to allow for storage and shipment delays."
Hopes this helps......but after all is said and done I have found the method that works for me and isn't that the important thing?

I was sitting here in the studio today, working on your PS's manicure (seems as though Santa is a "metrosexual"--who knew?!) and thinking what I still have to do to send him on his way. As I gazed from foot armatures to fienly sculpted hands to dolls and a myriad of accessories from both myself and Hoopie, my eye falls, quite naturally, upon the countenence of the "Jolly Old Elf" himself. Looking at his sweet face, I recall your comment that the doll you made for your commission is your finest effort so far, Well dear friend I beg to differ with you, but THIS guy has the sweetest face of any you have posted (followed closely by Vincent INHO)! Of course Abbie certainly has her job cut out for her to by pass you in costuming (Father Frost costume is to die for, as is the Requests and the Woodman and Vincent and the commission--well you get the picture!) but as far as faces go, I am sure gonna miss this guy greeting me every time I walk into the studio! Just thought I would let you know how I felt about him! I have a few more small accessories to do when I finish the hands (should be done with them in a couple hours) and then the feet (should be done tomorrow with them, I hope). And then he will go out next week! Progress report complete! 12/11/2004 10:32

Sherry, sorry to have to admit it was our city of Denver that had the Parade of Lights problem. We were gratified to see that the church group was allowed to carol before the parade and they had a turn out of several hundred from many churches participating. I am afraid that you may have a point about government taking Christ out of Christmas the trend does seem to be that way. I can see no sense in this but it does appear to be happening, here in Denver it started quite sometime back in the public schools not allowing any religious connotations to be shown. Strangely enough the large Merry Christmas sign on top of the City and County building will remain, so not everything is being hit by this trend. Having lived here for the past 40 years we have seen a very gradual erosion in Christmas observance from year to year, so that this year even some of the large grocery stores will be open for a good part of the day. Would like to know what the rest of the country is seeing in this regard. Merry Christmas to all from Jim and Jean B.

I'm sure you've all seen the news reports about this--the students at one high school were forbidden to play Christmas Carols at their Holliday concert, one religious organization was denied participation in the annual Parade of Lights because they would be promoting faith, the retail stores are putting up signs which say "Happy Hollidays" instead of Merry Christmas...on and on. What are your thoughts on this? Is it Christmas without Christ? Or will it just be a Federal Holliday? Sherry I hope I haven't started a conversation which will turn into a war. This discussion comes up every once on awhile on another list and what has stuck with me is that: the clay must reach the temperature designated on the package or it is not full cured. The following is a statement by a Polyform rep.: This is a chemical process. The clay needs to reach a
certain temp for a certain amount of time in order for
the polymerization to fully occur. Yes, if a piece is
not properly cured, it can become weak over time.
Think about what happens to clay that has been stored
improperly for too long of a time... it becomes
brittle and crumbly. So, does it not make sense that
if a piece is not fully cured, it, too, would

I am the Polyform rep that spoke at WOW last year. Am coming in on this
discussion a day late (as usual), but will reinforce what has been said here.
Follow the directions on the package! If you have any question as to the
condition of the clay when you begin a project...test it first. Sometimes clay has
been exposed to heat or other conditions in transit. Buy from reliable
sources. Store it properly. Bake the pieces at the temp in the directions and make
sure your oven is accurate. Yes, Polyform is selling an oven thermometer that
indicates the correct temp for each of their products, as flex etc requires
different temps than super sculpey. Undercuring could cause problems down the
line, but I have not heard or seen crumbling of these products if baked as
recommended. I cannot speak to the mixing of different BRANDS of clay
together...but my guess is that if they require different baking times, then there could
be a problem in the curing. I can attest to the integrity of Polyform and the
fact that they work constantly to improve their products. The shift from play
material to artist medium has demanded this! Polyform however, would be
working to make better products regardless.
Hope this helps. Polymer artists...take a deep breath and sculpt on! :-)

Holly it can be baked at 250 and be completely cured. But must be baked a little bit longer. 20 minutes per quater inch thickness. This is according to the Creaers and Jack Johnston as well. Since I started mixing with Cernit, I don't have problems with moonies. I made your hand out of SS and do have one moonie, even after coloring, but i may be able to carve away and rebake since it is only the one. Strangley enough the biggest problem I had with moonies in one piece was a batch of Prosculpt (and everyone says they NEVER have any trouble with moonies with PS!) that I bought last winter. They were everywhere! It turned out to be one of those pieces that I kept the eyes out of and threw away. I have another bar now and hope I don't have the same problem now and it was just a bad batch. Several people on Kathering Dewey's forum were having the same problem with clay ordered at the same time, so I'm thinkin' it must have been a batch gone evil or something! Prosculpt is marketed by Jack Johnston and was developed with his input, but is manufactured by Polyform, the Sculpey People. When someone from the dollmakers list contacted Polyform they explained that the moonies are a result of the plasticiser in the clay, and is very hard to control at the manufacturing level. They suggested, as did Katherine Dewey and JJ, being very careful never to bake over 275 degrees. Don't know if any of this helps anyone, just what I have garnered over the years from seveeral different experts and sources. Kathi

Kathi, What I meant by too much was the kind of people who over dramatize every teeny tiny little thing. I have a sister in law like that. She called my mom in tears that her husband, my brother, was cheating on her. The evidence? An email from some woman, that wanted to buy one of thier purebreed beagle puppies, asking if my brother could bring it to her in a small town an hour away. My brother had never met the woman. Of course you just need to listen when someone truly needs to talk. But I stand by my statement, in my experience the men I know are just as open as woman in expressing their feelings. I know just as many women that can't share anything. Maybe the reason that it's different for me is that I know so many photographer's - who tend to be more sensitive as a group than the average population. Holly H.

I do know what you mean Holly--but if someone needs to talk about and share the pain it is just that, a need. As hard as it may be sometimes, I try to listen as others have listened to me in the past. I know how hurtful it was when no-one wanted to talk about the loss--as if he had never existed and didn't matter. As for men and women and how they express grief, there are of course exceptions but countless studies have shown how men in Western nations tend to hold their grief in until it minifests itself in other more harmful ways. Tom was an exception and was very open when Toby died and talked to me about his love for and feelings about the loss of our son. But in counseling both mothers and fathers that have lost babies, I can tell you that it is much MUCH harder for a man to open up. It comes out over and over from the wives/partners that the women don't understand why their men aren't as devastated as they are. i told my own counselor that and like I said Tom ws pretty good about it. Of course we had talked about it to a parent who had lost a chile and she had made him see the necessity of talking about it. The truth is, the men are every bit as devastated as their womenfolk, just not equiped to voice it or deal with the pain.

Kathi,
You're right moonies can be a problem, I don't have a problem with them however, I never use fresh Super Sculpey by it's self. I let it set on the shelf for a year or more, before I work with it. When I do get to it, of course it's stiff, then I mix it with brand new SS, about 50/50 give or take. I have never had a problem since I began doing that. Erin Hopey told me to try that years ago and it works. I also never bake at temps higher than 250 degrees.

Pat, First of all I like that you kept the trim on his suit to a narrow width. Too many times I see fur trim that covers Santa's sleeves up to his elbows. His face seems great - wish I could see a close up photo! I agree with the others about the machines sitting at his feet, but I also understand that they are probably pretty important in the eyes of the recipient! That makes them significant elements in the sculpture. The other thing that seems a bit out of place is his sash. In the photo it appears that his suit is velvet or veveteen. it looks like the sash is made of felt or maybe a matte finish ribbon. If he had a woodsy wool suit, the felt would be perfect, but on the more elegant velvet, I'd prefer to see a brocade ribbon or a satin cord sah or something with a richer look. Of course you realize that everything we say is just our opinion! I bet your boss was absolutely thrilled! Holly H.

Doug and Sherry, It is definately harder for a man to open up after a tragedy. They are supposed to buck up and be strong for everyone else. What a burden we place on our menfolk! The pain is just there to fester and eat away and they don't feel they have anyplace to go with it. They don't want to talk to the women in their lives who share their agony because they don't want to remind her of the pain. Don't want to make her cry. For me, even after 23 years, everytime I talk about Toby, a little bit of the pain dissolves. Everytime I cry (still bawl like a baby the first time each Christmas season that I hear Silent Night! "Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in Heavenly Peace~Sleep in Heavenly Peace!"-It is what we put on the flowers~12 red roses and 1 white one~that we wire each Christmas to Arizona to have placed on his grave in the Babyland Section of the cemetary) a little more sorrow melts. Crying, even now, is okay. Crying is just gentle melting. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger~I truly believe that~and I also truly believe that the pain we suffer is for a reason. We may never know the reason here on earth, but in His embrace, all will be revealed, and we will be made to understand. Kathi Hey Doug! What happened to the ?

They are in the pharmacy here Bertha on the shelf by the diabetic supplies. I swear by them! Some people use just the tiniest drop of baby oil or Sculpey or Prosculpt Diluent. Ev has some good luck with antibacterial hand cleaner (which is alcolhol based) . Jodi Creager ( a really TOP artist and instructor--her videos are wonderful!) uses just the alcohol on a paintbrush to smooth small places. And Judith Klawitter recommends a product by Kinberly Clark called Naturally Tuff Orange Hand Cleaner (with no grit, or pumice, in it--that would ruin your sculpt.) She tells you to go easy with it as it may leave a white filmy residue after baking if you use too much. I love the convenience of the pads. I can rip one open just about anywhere I am working--computer, son's baseball games, lunch room at school during breaks, and oh yeah, my studio, as if i ever actually sculpted in there! LOL! And I don't have to worry about it spilling. So it just works well for me... Kathi again!

I personally love Cernit but I mix it with Super Sculpey. The Cernit alone has the most beautiful translucent skin tone, but it just gets so darn soft when you work with it that it drives me crazy! The mix is not quite as lovely but close, and SO much easier to work with. And with the mix, I have never gotten any of the moonies so common with the Super Sculpey (in fact have one on Holly's Progressive's hand that I need to work with). Prosculpt is okay--no kneading, but it just doesn't have, to me (and most would disagree, so it may just be me!) the color and translucence of real skin that the mix does. I have some PuppenFimo to try, and some Premier Air Dry Clay and some Paper Clay to try ASAP too...After the Progresives get caught up, and Christmas is over, and the Wizard is done (haven''t forgotten Holly!) and that one more neat accessory that Iwant to try for Hoopie's Progressive, and the last few accessories for Holly's Progressives, and who know's what I will dream up for Pat and Abbie's and...Okay I have just worn myself out and I am going to bed! Nite all! Kathi
