This has been a very interesting thread to follow! Makes me feel much better that the web site hasn't brought in as many inquiries so far this fall as last- but bummed out overall that we all are having a slow down in our sales- I can't agree more about the comments on Bonnie and her work- so distinctive and unique- yet she is managing to find and create something consumers want without selling out on her own vision. The result is spectacular!
I am still a big believer in the fact that we get back what we put out there and what we are open to receiving comes to us- so while I see that the slow down in the market is wide spread, I also think that for myself anyway, it has been partially due to not having the focus on sales that I did this time last year. Both from a perspective of marketing myself as well as to simply the power of positive thinking! (which is being applied to finding a man right now- LOL)!
I agree totally that those who know will seek out quality and that the collectors are out there and will find us- as well as to the earlier comments about collectors looking for something exceptional- but we all have to hold on to the fact that we do this because we love it- making others happy through sales (and our bank account look better- does that ever happen or do we just buy more fabric?!) is the ultimate in joy that we receive from this hobby and sometimes profession.
Just my two cents of agreement to the comments everyone else have made so much better- just flying on caffeine in the studio today so thought I would type some! LOL Hugs

Trish,

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kind of grapes are in that there wine you drink. I absolutely agree with every word you wrote. I also believe reinvention is one of the key ingredients to any thing we do, if we're going to market to the public. Nothing in America is worse than same old, same old. Gee where I live if a building is older than 30 or 40 years old... well then tear that sucker down and build a new one. New, different, fresh that's they key. Not build a better mouse trap, just design a better santa. Try something new. In my opinion there are such differences in Fine Art, Crafts and or Fine Crafts. Doll Shows are certainly not in the same catagory as any of the above. Most Doll people wouldn't be caught dead collecting santa's. They after a different element. I attended a show not long ago which was mainly for doll people, women were sauntering along with newborn doll babies in their arms as if it were the real live thing. I think they are wacko's, so what, that's there thing. But you can bet your bottom dollar they aren't going to have a santa claus figure in the other hand. However, at this same show was a sculptress, I do not know who she is, but I never have seen anyone to compare with her. She had a flock of people around her booth, I don't know how well she sold but she garnerd attention simply because she was fantastic, There were a few santa makers there and they did mostly zip. There are distinct markets but there is room for all, I believe. Okay I'll shut up and wow all I had was coffee.

I can vouch for the fact that it is more difficult to sell one of a kind Santas, or any hand made item right now due to the popularity and price of cheap imports.....sigh! Some people are just after 'cute' and they can get that at a fraction of the price in any shopping mall, but for the collector who collects because it is one of a kind (like me) an import won't do. It is a niche market and there are more of us to service it than ever before. I think there are very serious Santa collectors out there who will still pay for the piece that they just can't live without. Unfortunately, it may be a bit harder to find them, but they are there. I make all kinds of dolls, but Santas and elves (especially elves) are my favorite to make. My favorite collectible to buy is Santa...particularly carved Santas; and I don't buy reproductions. It is my pleasure to be able to buy directly from the artist. I don't ever buy any other way, and although I have to limit myself because of finances, if there is a piece that I just love, I will have it even if I have to work out some arrangement with the artist to accept payments before I take delivery. I can't believe that I am alone. There will always be people who appreciate quality and the individuality of the artist. I belong to the dollmaker's list and always amazed to see that a new member, who has never made a doll, will post a picture of their first attempt (almost always a fairy) and give a link to the ebay listing. If it doesn't sell in 3 days, they are back asking the group where they went wrong, never thinking that they are part of the problem. I don't mean that new artists shouldn't try to sell their work, but that the more there is to choose from, especially at a ridiculously low price, the harder it will be for anyone to sell to the general public. The market is certainly saturated with fairies, but the collectors are still buying, and paying good prices for the ones they want. I hope this rambling doesn't upset anyone. I guess that there will always be up and down times no matter what you sell. Your best protection against the down times is doing something different, finding your target market, and maybe gritting your teeth will help. LOL I always think about Bonnie Jones when this comes up, and I can't help but admire the fact that she has developed her own style, isn't afraid to try something different, and can be successful because of it, not in spite of it........and no, this isn't a paid political announcement. I don't even know Bonnie, but am using her as an example. Be true to your own style and roll with the punches (or market). Here is a link to a wonderful piece of art. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2461&item=5530316336&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW A perfect example. Not a Santa, but a good example all the same of being inventive. Now Jodi and Richard could likely sell anything they created, based on their reputation. Here, though, they have once again come up with something fresh and different and wonderful. The top of the mark artists feel the pinch just like everybody else, but to stay there you have to be thinking and reinventing your wheel all the time. There, I have finished my glass of wine and am down off my soapbox. Cheers everybody, Trish

Hi all,
I'm working on my first Santa
head. Woohoo!!!! It's going to be an ornament. I'll have
to fill you in on my awesome weekend but it may have to wait until
tomorrow. Still preparing for the upcoming craft fair and can't seem to
get my fingers working fast enough to create inventory. I need to get
cracking! lol

Sherry, not to beat a dead
horse here, but I looked through all of my messages and couldn't find
either of the contracts. Would it be too much trouble to send them to me
individually? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

I don't like the title of the article ( I have childhood issues with "Jolly Holly" nickname!) but I am so pleased with the rest of it! The editor did a great job of taking the descriptions I wrote about each piece and weaving it into an article. I guess that's why she's an editor & I'm not! Holly H.

I am with both Jill's. I am a Santa artist - I can't see doing anything else right now unless I get a commission for a portrait piece. In fact, after this show I am doing, I will be using this 'down time' to work on technique and explore marketing tools I don't think Santa is out. I think our customer is just trying to making a living. The gals buying babies - that's their thing just like Santas are for us. Teddy Bear people collect Teddy Bears. My hubby collects vintage Zippos. He won't buy other brand because his collection is Zippos. We just need to find our Santa collectors. As a group, maybe we need to combine efforts in someway. Kim

Sherry,

I don't think I could stand not doing santa, Christmas is my favorite time of the year for many reasons. I adore Autumn and Halloween, and no matter what direction I go in I'm always going to have a few santa's in there. I've noticed people enjoy scenes, they get a kick out of standing there and picking out all the different things tucked into the whole thing. They'll start to quite looking and then suddenly it's "oh look at the whatever." I may be way out on a limb but I am doing more and more scenes that tell a story, granted they are harder to transport and the customer has to worry about storage but for the last two years it's paid off for me. A marketing class I took recently stressed NOSTALGIA! over and over and over. The aim was to touch something within the past that evokes warm feelings of the past of childhood and etc. Lot's of good points in the what was said. The professor said there are 10 characteristics which contribute to a product. So I'm going to incorporate those for next year.

I assured him that I was and he said "Well I know you were listening but sometimes I don't think you hear ." Out of the mouths of babes huh? I've downloaded Ad-aware, Spybot, and others, but they just keep coming back. I don't like XP or HP. I've had more problems with this computer than any other ! It seems to run slower every day. I guess my husband needs to reformat this thing, but it takes time and we don't know whether we're coming or going these days. : ) Jill Z

New Message on SantaMakers

From: ciarino
Message 13 in Discussion

Making shoes and boots (and feet) is about one of my favorite things about making dolls. I make both sculpted boots and shoes or leather or suede. When I make leather or suede, I sculpt a basic foot with no detail and cover it with the leather which has been prestitched where seams would normally be. I then glue the leather onto the foot butting the seams together to avoid bulk. I also shave the seam areas down on the underside of the leather with a new scalpel so that there isn't too much bulk. I often add polymer soles especially if they are boots with a ridged sole. I like sculpting footwear too, and find that you can put lots of character into it when you're sculpting. I use the little eyelets that Jack Johnston uses and glue embroidery thread into the eyelets (that suits the size of my dolls which are usually about 10" tall) as shoe laces. I have a big box of little buckles, eyelets, jewellery findings, rings beads and buttons that I add to shoes to add some interest. I guess it's whatever moods strikes me. I like to try different things and when the doll speaks, I listen. (my husband wishes I would do the same for him LOL) Trish

Hi Ladies, Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I guess I'm going to keep making them too and just hope they will come back "in" sometime soon! I just have way to much of the "stuff" that it takes to make them. It has taken so many years to collect and I couldn't dream of giving it away or even selling it. I'm glad that I had those fertile years in the 90s, anyway. Sorry to hear the market seems depressed right now, but you never know! You all make gorgeous pieces of art and the tried and true Santa collector will surely find you! I handsculpt my faces as well, but I dont make them with legs ( don't know why, I guess because it's easier that way), I dont have a digital camera, or I would post them....would it be worth putting up a website? Do you all get much business from it? And how do you make one so that it will be listed on search engines? See, I don't know much about the internet.... Thanks again, Rose

Santa sales are down this year, no doubt about it, but there's a need in me to create them, so I guess I'll just have to have a bigger storage area ! Babies are a big item... if you happen to have been at the Toy Fair and IDEX you would agree... there were ladies everywhere carting them around like they were their real live children, even in strollers. The silicone babies were especially popular.. if you carry them around long enough they absorb your warmth and feel like a live baby. One lady was even selling silicone alien babies ! It seemed that some of these people carry their obsession with babies a little far, but I'm a Santa person, so what do I know !? Maybe some people collect babies the way other people collect Santas ! I've been thinking of making a few babies myself (out of clay :) just to see how it goes, but Santa will always be my favorite ! Jill Z

Yes, VERY good question. I have been wondering about that too. Of course my own commissions slowed to nothing this year because I just haven't been able to work on any and if I get them back up again, I'm going to have to start all over again with the marketing thing. Bonnie is right that from all reports the art doll world has been in a slump, and the Santa market in particular, unless you are well known, then I think you might be selling alright, as you've already built your clientel. There are many, many very talented Santa artists out there, with excellent websites so the consumers have a lot more to choose from too. I do think that it might be wise to diversify and not be so specilized. One could still offer the Santas ( we all enjoy making them) but as Bonnie says, mabe we need to find some other nich. The babies are hot right now, Reborn, sculpted, whatever, and those doing fairies seem to be selling , but I'm wondering if they are selling as well now as they have been. We have a few fairy artists here with us. How about it girls. Are you doing as well as you were? The area where you are selling makes a big difference. I have always had to get to the large cities to sell very well. If you are in a rual area, people there may love your work, Ohhh and Ahhh, but they aren't going to buy, because they can't afford even the lowest priced ones. Like Bonnie, I've pretty much been limited to one or two shows a year and the sales at those have been almost silch for the last couple of years. Sherry

Hi Rose,
I was glad to see your question about the santa market. I think there has been a change and I agree with Bonnie, so many artists are making santas, I also agree with her that collectors are wanting something very unique.
This Halloween thing is gaining momentum, I did a Christmas show last year in Washington D.C. and the first thing I sold, right off the bat ,was my one Halloween Witch I had sculpted. I too am leaning towards making more items for that holiday. Unfortunantely I think the state your in is less likely to be fertile for sales, comparative to Delaware. And another oddity, I did a large show in Richmond last year as well, the first thing that sold there was a sculpture of a old cowboy, I billed him as a santa but he was not dressed as such. The buying public to hard to figure. But if you think sales are sluggish in SC try KS. It's a lot cause. Art is something you can't wear, eat, live in, or drive, so it's considered useless here, for the most part.
Jill

Hi! Last night on the chat we talked about the KC Doll Fair. A couple people were asking about it & were directed to the site www.kcdollfair.com . I just got an email from Marilyn Huston telling what workshops she will be teaching this year. I checked the site & the scheduale is still not up but they must have it somewhat decided or Marilyn wouldn't be promoting her workshops. Anyway! She is going to teach Santa Jesters & making an articulated body with the Bob McKinley method. I took a Jester class last year & would recommend it! I will probably take her body class this year as she is s terrific instructor. Very clear & easy to follow, and extremely well prepared! Hope to see lots of you in KC! Holly H.

New Message on SantaMakers

From: Bonnie
Message 2 in Discussion

This is an interesting question. I do know the Art Doll World has been in a slump and some say it is beginning a slow revival. As for Santas, I do not think they are as popular now as they were and there are many, many people out there making santas. I think the true collector is now looking for that really different and exceptional santa. But, I do think the area where you are selling is also a big factor. I know that so far the expensive Santas have not been selling on E-bay. There just does not seem to be a big market for them. I did sell some small low priced santas on E-bay last year. There is one artist who sells faeries during the year and now she is beginning to sell santas on E-bay, but these are not priced in the big ticket range, but she has developed a following and that is what you need on E-bay. I have customers who buy one nice santa each year; but, I have not had as many inquiries from my website this year as I did last year. It is hard for me to judge since I only do one show each year. These are just some thoughts that are rattling around in my head. And I do not think those rows of tacky santas at Walmart hurt our sales. Hope someone else can come up with better thoughts. AND I have heard from quite a few artists that BABIES are really big and it is quite obvious from looking at the internet. I may just start doing only Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bonnie

Hi gals! Since I am back up and running I want to get the feature changed since we have had the same one up for awhile- if you have not yet been featured and would like to be, please send a little bio along with the names of the photos (that are already in your album) that you would like used- This will hopefully give me a few of them so as the month coming to Christmas near I can swap them around and give several a chance at exposure at this traffic intensive time or year for our little site!
Please e-mail the bio and info to me at lisa@thegrandfatherclaus.com
The bio just needs to be a bit about you personally, what you do or anything else that you think we would be interested to know about how you got into Santa making or what is special about it to you etc. If you have a web site, please include that address too or an e-mail address!
Thanks guys- Hugs,
