When Becki said she had plastic eyes, I asssumed she had PLASTIC eyes, like from a craft store- not the Glastic eyes. I wouldn't chance true plastic eyes, even at 220 degrees, Course she could always just put a pair in the oven by them selves & see what happens before baking them in a finished head. Holly H.

Hi all,
When using the glastic eyes, you should cover them with a cotton ball while baking. This helps to keep them from getting so hot. I have had some crack but they were pieces for me and I put clear nail polish over them and you could not tell they had cracks in them.

Inspiration for making Santas comes from countless sources... pictures, small toys, magazines, other artists, fabric, antiques, buttons, ornaments, people I see, even things picked up from my own back yard ! I am working on a commissioned Santa now that will have a pink robe... not something you'd normally think of Santa wearing but I think he'll be pretty cool when he's finished. ... I never realized how rare a good heavyweight pink fabric is... time to do some digging ! I see lots of pink fleece but nothing else, but I did find some sheer pink with gold glitter that I thought I'd sew over a lightweight pink material, almost like flannel. Oh boy, this should be interesting! But any color or pattern is fine for Santa as far as I'm concerned... he's a fun-loving guy who'd wear almost anything. Jill Jill's Santas

I have a bunch of wool left that is just a big pile of fuzzy stuff! Is there anything I can do to make this usable? Is it possible to curl it myself? I'm thinking maybe I can wind some strands around a piece of wire and wet it down and let it air dry? I've used some of this before on the underneath portions of hair and beard, with nice curls on top but I'm down to the really fuzzy stuff now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Becki

I have used plastic eyes from artistique they have held up fine , keep in mind I have a convection oven. The only problem I had was getting a clay film on one eye which on glass you can remove, but plastic scratches, so be careful

Sherry, I got a jar of mica flakes from Mangelsen's in Omaha NE. I don't think they have a website but I know for a fact that they will take mail orders over the phone. Just call directory assistance for Omaha NE & ask for Mangelson's store. Sorry I got it last year & I don't remember what I paid. It was in a plastic jar about the size of a box of salt. Sorry--I meant Norma, not Hoopie! And Becki, they have as small as 6mm eyes in the flat backed eyes for less than $5 a pair. If even that is too big, they also have really inexpensive glass eyes on wire for tiny dolls (but they say they are irregulars) in 2 and 4mm sizes that are like 70 cents or so. Of course you have to figure in what their minimum might be (I'm not sure) and how much shipping will be. So you can take it from there... Kathi

Becki and Hoopie-- Before you throw out your plastic eyes--they CAN be baked at a lower temperature without melting. One of my first dolls had plastic eyes and so did Tavish's (my 19 year old son) one and only sculpt. They did just fine at 220 degrees, for an hour baking. Be aware though that, although I haven't had any problems with this doll breaking, the clay may not be as strong as when it is cured at 275. And the quality of the plastic eyes are just not as good as glass of course as over time they can fade and change color even. Still if you are basically practicing to perfect your sculpting, they would serve that purpose! Mini World Dolls has some very inexpensive flat backed oval paperweight glass eyes. I don't think they come in the size you may be wanting Becki, but it is worth a look. Their website is http://www.miniworlddolls.com. Kathi

Well Becki that makes two of us! The eyes I have been fighting with come from old discarded dolls at the slavage center! Like you I couldn't afford to buy the eyes while I am just learning. SO I thought well this is recycling too and was proud of myself. But I do have a couple of glass eyes from this too so now I have to change them right away! Me again Bonnie! I am getting ready to order some Apoxie and I just wanted to be sure about some things. 1.) It is Apoxie SCULPT I want , right? Not Clay, but SCULPT. 2) What color do I order? Natural or white? It is for things like bodies, a walking stick, general type stuff and so I will be painting most likely. What do you suggest? and 3) Do I need anyting to go with the clay? Its never the same for me, but your descriptions are pretty close. The only thing I might add is I have a mirror that I hold the head in front of which helps me get they eyes set a little better.

As far as Santas go its actually the fabrics I find that get my imagination in gear. The other dolls I often go through magazines like renassaince and bride. The small faes usually go buff so a bit of wired ribbon works there

Well, I haven't done tons of Santa's yet but I find the materials themselves inspire me more often than not. I'll take a trip to the fabric store and peruse the velvets and silks and brocades and see what turns up. I really like traditional US style and old world santas and I'm not at the proliferation point of having tapped that out in my head yet ;)

I do the designs that tickle me. Although St. Nick is said to be an elf - he is a giant to me - big and burly. Velvet and fur are comfy for me. I love the jewel tone colors - those are comfy for me. And nothing tickles me more than to do a big, burly ole sole in my favorite comfy fabric and colors. I do have pics I collect of faces and I do explore costumes for other countries. I love the olde world europeon style. Kim

I'm finally posting to the group - I have been reading the posts for several months but haven't had time to post or get involved in any of the threads.

I have been making Santas for about 8 years. Very focused on them for the last 4.

I live in Central Pennsylvania with my husband, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Transplanted from Texas 4 years ago.

Creating Santas is a full time job for me except on Wednesdays when I am a Weight Watchers Leader for 4 meetings - gets me out of the house...

Several of my Santas are in the Doll Crafter December issue (pgs 19-20) - I'll try to figure out how to post pictures on the Santa Makers site soon -

I look forward to sharing and learning from everyone - this seems to be a great group!!!

An image of the finished piece just pops in my head fully formed usually before I ever start sculpting. Most of the time I can't recreate that image because I can't find the right fabrics, trims or embellishments. Shopping is very poor for that kind of thing around here. So I almost always make a million compromises and changes along the way. If I had to say what inspires my ideas the answer would be all the information I've put in my brain over the years mixes up and spills out. I think it's really important to read alot of books & magazines, look at lot's of videos, take a lot of classes etc. The more you put in, the more can come out. I read rubber stamp & quilting publications. I don't practise either one of those arts but I find ideas in the color combinations, the embellishments, the techniques . . . The 3 magazines I would most recomend are Art Doll Quarterly, Quilting Arts and Expression. Holly H.

Becki! DO NOT use the plastic eyes. They will melt when you bake the head. I've never tried painting eyes so I don't know, but my thoughts are either paint after baking - which would be difficult or get paint made for glass at the craft store. A lot of that glass paint needs to be baked to set it anyway so no problem when you stick your head in the oven. Have you tried ebay? sometimes you can get real good deals on glass eyes that someone is selling out thier hobby supplies. Holly H.

Doug, Good for you being there. A lot of guys still won't go into the delivery rooms, but I think it is soooo important for Daddy to be part of the birth itself if at all possible. He needs to bond with his new son/daughter as much as Mom share the joy. Sherry
