When a child was born, at the end of the first months, sets of clothing tailored along the same lines as the parents would be presented by the maternal grandmother to replace the swaddling clothes. These would generally comprise a red center-opening or side-fastening jacket, a green sleeveless waistcoat and divided trousers, navel cover, and hat. Underwear for a young child would consist of the navel cover and later, a small triangular embroidered apron called a dou dou which fastened with tapes round the neck and waist. Indeed, this apron might be the only form of Chinese clothing, Chinese dress, cheongsam, oriental dress worn by a child in the hot summer months until it was two or three years old.
